Dhoni dominates, Kuldeep shines

Technical and analytical analysis of warm-up match between India A and England

Dhoni Dominates

When Dhoni got a chance to decide his batting position, he placed himself at number 5 - to bat in terminating overs. If, at all, there was any doubt (now) over his finishing prowess, Dhoni spurned it by smashing 68 runs in just 40 balls at an impressive strike-rate of 170. Coming in to bat in 42nd over Dhoni walloped 8 fours and 2 sixes. The crux was the last over of India-A innings where he bludgeoned 23 runs off Chris Woakes - twice clearing ropes through on-side and once delicately shepherding ball over third-man. He had probably dropped a hint for Virat about conundrum over his batting position.

Dhawan finds form

Shikhar Dhawan has already capitulated his test spot to KL Rahul. Selectors have overlooked him for T20s. So that makes upcoming England ODIs cardinal for him. At Brabourne Stadium he warm-up-ed in best possible way by scoring 63 runs. His innings started sluggishly, the feet wasn't quite moving, the hand-eye coordination wasn't clicking, he was also jammed on strike. But as he gained impetus everything felt in right place and he exhibited wide range of shots - drives, pull, sweep. The strike-rate of 75 may look odd but the time he spend on crease was invaluable.

Kuldeep Yadav Shines

Kuldeep Yadav, 22, has already impressed likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri. On Tuesday, in Brabourne Stadium he did no harm to his reputation by picking up a fifer. Twice he broke the partnership, once when English openers were strolling on 95-0 and again when Jos Butler and Sam Billings were shepherding England's chase brilliantly.  He got Jason Roy with dip and Jos Butler with flight as both tried to slog. Moeen Ali was firstly squared by ripping leg-break and then undone by a quicker one - natural variation, Liam Dawson was befuddled in loop. The impressive part was, each of five wickets were of well set batsman.

Ambati Rayudu slams a ton

By scoring a century, Ambati Rayudu has added him to long list of top-order batting reserves ahead of champions trophy. The right-hander slammed 97 balls ton, before retiring out, on his comeback after missing Ranji Trophy due to injury. With India A in early trouble after losing Mandeep Singh, Ambati Rayudu along with Shikhar Dhawan resurrected India A innings. The hallmark of the century was judging the length of the ball. Widish balls were cut and shortish were pulled. To spinners inside-out loft was used to thwack their line-lengths. Having proper knowledge of his off-stump meant that he left the balls with substantial ease.
